Have Mercy on Me
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!” Psalm 51:1-2
King David is writing after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his sin. David committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband killed. Through the love and boldness of Nathan, David repented and asked God to give him mercy. David knows what he should receive as punishment, but he is asking God to withhold it. He knows that he is guilty, and he knows that God is just in giving him the punishment due an adulterer and murderer; death. David, because of his repentance, is asking God to give him mercy. Not because David deserves it, but because of God’s love.
God will show you the same kind of mercy if you will just humble yourself and ask!
Application– To get closer to God, we need to repent! Take a few minutes to search your own heart! What do you need to repent of? Cry out to God to give you mercy!
